Mess around for a bit and try to find a color that looks good.
This is pretty fun to play with, I have to admit. Click on it and you’ll launch the color selection tool: The box that appears is the selected color box. Click on the small radio button just to the left of “Color”… Note near the bottom is the “Background” section. Select “Show View Options” and you’ll see something that gives you a lot more preferences and settings than I bet you realized where available: Somewhere in the background of that window, you’ll want to Ctrl-Click (in other words, hold down the “control” key on your keyboard and click the mouse / trackpad) to pull up the contextual menu: We’ll start with an innocuous and boring Finder window with a typical white background:

Let’s just look at how to change the background color of a Finder window in Mac OS X and you’ll see as we go how you could instead apply a photo if you were so inclined. If it’s a background picture, resizing will reveal the edges, and if it’s a set of custom icons, clicking on one will select it and invert its color scheme.
One easy way to differentiate next time you see one of these slick folder windows? Resize it and watch what happens, or, for that matter, click on one of the “background” graphical elements and see if it’s clickable. There are two ways to do this, from what I have been able to ascertain: create custom icons for empty files that are the shape, or pieces of the shape, you want, or to create a background picture that they apply to the Finder window. I know just what you mean, and it’s pretty slick how app developers create Finder window backgrounds that have a huge arrow pointing to an alias for the Applications folder or similar.
