Resize it and watch what happens, or, for that matter, click on one of the “background” graphical elements and see if it’s clickable. There are two ways to do this, from what I have been able to ascertain: create custom icons for empty files that are the shape, or pieces of the shape, you want, or to create a background picture that they apply to the Finder window. I know just what you mean, and it’s pretty slick how app developers create Finder window backgrounds that have a huge arrow pointing to an alias for the Applications folder or similar.
